Artist's Comments

Well, I had fun drawing the Thespian, so I thought I'd draw him a companion. :)

- the lambda and Greek letter on the aspis (shield) may have originated during the Peloponessian wars, which was after when this kind of hoplite was used. However, there are also assumptions that the Spartans used it before the others, which could have originated sooner. Therefore, I went the usual direction and gave his shield a lambda.
- did any Spartans wear linothorax? I believe they did, but only when bronze was either unavailable or unaffordable. So I gave him the ordinary bronze musclc cuirass, which the Spartans carried on using long after all other city-states went linen.

Watercolour and ink.

The Spartans during the Persian Wars era used distinctive regimental (mora) designs, like the hawk for the Skiritai, the boar, the scorpion, etc. So, for instance, during Thermopylae the Spartans would not have used the Lamtha shield blazon, but rather the different mora designs depending on the regiment from which each of the '300' was chosen. Leonidas himself would have carried a shield with a pinwheeled "sunray" design. His two most loyal and vicious bodyguards also would have worn Olympic laurels over their helmets, since they were no doubt Olympic champions. :D Great images in your gallery Apele! Love them to death!

Check out this link. Good prices and it's where I get alot of my gear. [link]

Those prices are some of the best I've seen for an armoury site, even though they don't use bronze. Do they custom make anything? I'd like a Corinthian helmet with a transverse crest.

Deepeeka and Windlass cary bronze but it is really expensive. Custom work is even more expensive. Museum Replicas has a crested hoplite in bronze for $435. Brass is much less expensive but not historically accurate. [link] has a nice italo corinthian for $240. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. If you really want good custome work, I recommend [link] They are artisians in the Ukrian and takes forever to get your order...but they are the best I've seen. They take paypal and are trustworthy. Well worth the price. I've ordered several items from them and I'd say they are the best.

Nice drawing, but the feathers/hair on his helmet look a bit funny..
